Global Warming Essay

Global warming refers to an increase in the average global temperature to a level that affects life-forms on the surface of the Earth. The factors responsible for this can be both natural and man-made. The warming of the earth due to natural factors is not an unusual phenomenon. Earth's climate is variable. For example, about 18,000 years ago, the Earth was about 5°C cooler than it is today, and that was the last glacial period on Earth. After this, global temperatures began to rise.

The earth is kept warm due to what is known as the greenhouse effect. Without it the earth would be a frozen barren land. The short wavelength or ultraviolet radiation coming from the occultation enters the atmosphere and is absorbed by the Earth. This absorbed energy is also radiated back into space at infrared wavelengths. There are gases in the Earth's atmosphere that trap some of the outgoing radiation and thus heat the Earth. These gases are known as greenhouse gases. Water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane, ozone, nitrous oxide, CFCs and halogens are prime examples that maintain the global energy balance, with both the atmosphere and the surface warming until the outgoing energy equals the incoming energy.

An increase in the quality of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere can reinforce the greenhouse effect (increased Earth's temperature) and lead to global warming. Carbon dioxide is the biggest contributor to global warming, as it holds the largest share of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. The reason behind this is natural disorder as well as man-made activities. Volcanic eruptions and forest fires are some of the natural causes that cannot be prevented but have a cumulative effect on the current global trend i.e. deforestation, increased combustion of fossil fuels with a net increase in carbon dioxide content.

We know that forests are areas where green leaves use carbon dioxide efficiently to make their food. Deforestation reduces this use of carbon dioxide. Consumption of fossil fuels and household fuels releases significant amounts of carbon dioxide. Therefore, reduction in the use of fossil fuels is very important. Equally important is tree plantation. It should be encouraged and we should understand its importance.

Along with reduction in the use of fossil fuels, the use of domestic fuels like charcoal, kerosene should also be reduced by encouraging LPG stoves and bio-gas plants. They cause less atmospheric pollution. If these methods are not implemented, we will have to face serious consequences like floods, droughts, storms and extreme hot summers. Not only this, sea level may rise due to increase in global temperature.

We cannot control natural phenomena but we can control ourselves. By adopting the above mentioned methods, we can reduce the risk of global warming to a great extent. To get rid of this problem, we have to think holistically.
