Dowry System—A Social Evil Essay

Dowry system has been prevalent in our society in some form or the other since the age of civilization. This is one of the biggest evils of our society. It is an insult to the sacred institution of marriage, parents give huge sums of money so that their daughter can lead a happy married life. The groom's parents try to get the most out of the bride's parents. Unreasonable demands have been made by the parents of the groom and sometimes, the marriage ceremony is abruptly stopped for want of sufficient dowry. Dowry demands huge amounts of cash, refrigerators, cars, color television sets, scooters and even houses. In order to meet the demands of the greedy in-laws of their daughters, the parents of the girls have to take huge loans. No wonder the birth of a daughter is not liked by any Indian parent.

Giving dowry is a very old custom. In the past also the parents of the girl have been giving dowry as a gift. Its supporters give various arguments to justify it. According to him, this is a good way to set up an establishment for his newlyweds. Some say that a daughter-in-law who brings enough dowry with her gets better respect than her in-laws. On the other hand, a bride without adequate dowry feels insecure and uncomfortable.

These are all absurd arguments and in no way can justify this social evil. There is no point in setting up an establishment by dissolving the establishment of the parents of the bride. Modern girls are educated and, in many cases, not dependent on their husbands for their upbringing. It is foolish to insist on dowry in such cases as regular earnings are not less than dowry. A girl can gain confidence not by dowry but by her merits.

Fighting this evil is the duty of all the enlightened citizens of our country. We have to free our society from this curse. Anti-dowry act has been implemented but if people do not cooperate, the evil of dowry cannot be eradicated. In fact, there should be a social boycott of all dowry seekers and givers. Educated boys and girls should bow down not to marry the sons and daughters of dowry seekers.

This social evil is eating away at the foundation of our society. It is our foolishness to promote and be a part of dowry in a country like India which weighs us down and still makes us a developing country.
