Role of the Citizens in a Democracy Essay
India is the largest democracy country in the world. Democracy means government by the people, for the people and for the people. They do this by electing their representatives to the government. All citizens of the country who have attained their majority have the right to vote in a democracy. It is perhaps one of the most important rights as it determines the type of government that will come to power.
Obviously, the role of citizens is very important in a democracy. They have to be aware of both rights and duties. They need to know what to expect from their elected representatives. Citizens should be aware of the problems of their region as well as the whole country. Only then they can understand whether the government is taking right steps for their welfare or not. This is possible only when we give importance to our education and get knowledge about current events and policy making through newspapers, magazines, television, public meeting etc.
As democracy allows its citizens to express their opinion publicly, so citizens have every right to freely criticize the government if they feel that it is not discharging its duties properly. However, his way of opposing the government should be civilized. For this they should not take violent steps. On the other hand the government should give due respect to the views of the people who speak against it.
It has been seen many times that people shy away from voting in elections. They feel that their vote will not make any difference to the outcome. If they do not involve themselves in the electoral process, dishonest and selfish candidates are likely to be elected. Therefore citizens should exercise their right to vote. Being good citizens they should take interest in the welfare of their country. They should always be ready to help for good deeds.
Democracy can be strengthened if its citizens have a clear view of their rights and the rights of others. A democratic state depends exclusively on the quality of its citizens. If citizens do not take interest in politics, then even a democratic state can turn undemocratic day by day. Therefore, all citizens should remain loyal to their country in the best possible way.
Good citizens always respect the laws of their country. They keep an eye on the enemies who break these laws. Hence, they are always ready to help the law keepers in reducing the crime and arresting the criminals. Not only this, they also respect other religions. They keep in their mind that India is a secular country and they have to maintain its essence.
In short, citizens should be honest, trustworthy, dutiful and alert. Only then can a democratic nation flourish.
