Plot

Set in Delhi during 2010, the film begins when Bharat, a shopkeeper, refuses to leave his store despite lucrative offers. On his 70th birthday, he reveals his past life to his granddaughter, and the film moves into flashbacks.

Partition, 1947

Bharat's parents and siblings board a train to India with many refugees for protection from the horrific riots in Pakistan.  Bharat lost his younger sister Gudiya to the chaos.

Bharat's father, Gautam, leaves behind in search of Gudiya.  He has promised Bharat that he will take care of the family and will go to the imported goods shop of Gautam's sister Jamuna and her husband Price Rai Kapoor.  As a child, Bharat supports his family.  He befriends a young boy, Vilayati, and they meet Radha, a roadside circus worker, as they fall in love.  The trio join The Great Russian Circus.

17 years later

Bharat has gained a lot of fame over the years he spent in the circus.  During a celebration, his brother Chhote gets injured in an accident while trying to emulate him.  He bids Radha a tearful farewell.  The whole country is in shock due to the death of Nehru.  India and Vilayati are looking for different jobs.

11 years later

India joins Indian diaspora inspired by the discovery of oil in Saudi Arabia to earn money for the wedding of her other sister Mehak.  There she falls in love with her chief engineer, Kumud Raina, whom she affectionately addresses as "Madam Sir".

Kumud asks Bharat to marry him, but he refuses fearing that it will get in his way in fulfilling Gautam's promise.  Back in India, Kumud arrives to declare his love for Bharat.  They start a live-in relationship.

8 years later

Jamuna dies;  India is accepted for the station master job.  During the 1983 Cricket World Cup, Price, in need of money, plans to sell the store, but Bharat disagrees and says that he and Jamuna had worked hard and did not want to sell the store.  Price asks him to buy the shop.  Bharat does so, as he still hopes that Gautham will return.

Bharat leaves India again with Vilayati as a sailor for a period of 8 months.  He earns enough money to buy the store and Vilayati marries a foreigner, Susan.

12 years later

After economic liberalization and globalization in India, Kumud becomes the creative director of the newly formed Zee TV and runs a program that reunites relatives separated during Partition.

During the show, Bharat talks to Mehr, a London based adopted by a British family during Partition and realizes that she is a doll and returns to India.  There is an emotional reunion.  Janki dies soon after;  Bharat hopes to find Gautam as well.

Present day

Bharat decided to sell the store, which he refused to do despite the loss.  Before the train reaches, Gautham promises that he will reunite with her at the store, explaining why Bharat has been at the store for so long.

Renuka Vahaye of The Times of India gave the film three-and-a-half stars out of five, calling it "a tedious, scrappy watch despite the hype of entertainment, humor and nobility". He concluded, "India is well-intentioned, entertaining and does not fall into the trap of commercial potboilers". CNN-News18's Priyanka Sinha Jha rated the film with three stars out of five, praising Khan for her performance, and feels the script is a bit lengthy and requires 'sharp' editing. In the end, she says, "For all its virtues, India falls short of becoming a tour de force, but it can become a crowd-puller." Trade analyst and critic Taran Adarsh agrees with Jha on trimming the script and gives it four out of five stars. Declaring it a "smash-hit", he praised Ali, Kaif for the direction and Khan for the performance. He feels that the film is an emotional journey that wins over the audience. Gulf News's Manjusha Radhakrishnan also says that it would have benefited from trimming, so the film looks "sluggish", which can test the patience of the audience. And, she gives it two out of five stars. Ananya Bhattacharya, who writes for India Today, praised Kaif and Khan's performances, but feels the main attraction is Sunil Grover. She also rates it with three stars out of five and concludes that Salman has given 'a different entertainer' to his fans. Writing for CNN-News18, Rajeev Masand found the film "indescribably boring" and "annoyingly long". He rated the film with two stars out of five. Anna M.M.Vaticad of Firstpost finds the film laden with weak 'humor' and 'weak' songs. Rating it with two stars out of five, Vaticad concluded, "Far from being Forrest Gump with Salman Khan, India is mostly a plodding trek to post-1947 contemporary India." Jyoti Sharma Bawa of Hindustan Times found it 'an emotional Eid winner' and rated it with three stars out of five. Shubhra Gupta of The Indian Express gave it two and a half stars out of five and said, "The good thing about the film is that despite its eye-roll moments, it attempts to make an 'ordinary' man without any special skills. " Anupama Chopra of Film Companion, "Madam, a lady with courage and conviction, is the most memorable character in India. I would love to see contemporary history from her point of view. This version has sweep and swagger but not enough soul."
