Mouni (Sai Pallavi) also flees to Hyderabad, not only to assert her independence from a family she doesn't understand, but also from some demons from her past. He has his own Zumba center, even as he struggles to make ends meet. She wants to take up an IT job and instead Revanth encourages her to help her with her Zumba classes until she finds what she needs. Mouni is often referred to as – ne valla kaad – so many times that you believe her when she says – niku dil ne abba ko Leya. The two are often given the short end of the stick through the film but they manage to keep themselves afloat with each other's help. They also make their lovely bridges between their homes and are often found in the middle, literally and figuratively.
But what starts off as a light-hearted entertainer with funny moments, thanks to Gangvva, gets heavier as the film progresses. As Mouni dances on the Saranga river and Revanth plans their future together, you feel a sinking feeling in the pit of your stomach. The couple steals moments of quiet on the subway but the stuff they bring along hangs over them. Shekhar does such a wonderful job of helping you get invested in the lives of Kammula Revanth and Mouni that your heart races when the story gets thick. It doesn't help that another young couple meets a fate they know gives them no hope. In the scenes where Revanth screams in desperation and Mouni clarifies that it is not the women of the house that need to be controlled, it is the men, stay with you long after the film is completed.
Naga Chaitanya easily delivers the best performance of his career with Revanth. He is assigned a character who is sensitive, humble, understanding of a girl's boundaries, and someone who isn't afraid to go the extra mile for love - and he pulls it off well. It's a dream to watch Sai Pallavi when she dances but when she performs she is delighted. You cry whenever she cries at the touch of a man, your heart breaks when she cries and it gets magnified when she finds a trustworthy partner in Revanth. Rajeev Kanakala has been given a role that goes beyond the usual villain with dialoguebaazi. He is as dependable as ever and pulls off what he needs. So are Ishwari Rao and Uttej, people who want the best for Revanth, yet find their plans foolish. Pawan Cha's music adds to the texture of the film, so does Vijay C Kumar's camerawork.
Prem Katha however is not a film without its flaws. In another realistic film, Uttej's character devises a plan to help the couple so bizarre that it almost makes you laugh out loud. But again, it makes it clear that such drastic measures are needed. The climax also helps Revanth achieve his heroic moment, even if it is only for a few minutes. Some may even complain that the film 'pulls' at some places, some scenes have been kept to take home which has already been noted. Others would say that there is nothing new at the center of the story of two individuals trying to convince their families of their love. And as Kammula conveys plot points to big revelations about Mouni's past through the film, it makes you wonder if it was a little early. The ending is done too soon. But he deserves congratulations for handling both caste inequality and child sexual abuse with sensitivity and not using mere plot lines to take the story forward. These issues are instead woven into the existence of their main characters.
Even though stories of caste inequality have been picked up by Tollywood in recent times, it is not often that a film like Love Story is told so carefully. And it certainly isn't often that women's issues are shown in mainstream cinema. Watch the movie if love stories with depth are your cup of tea.
