Corruption in India Or Corruption—A Cancer of Society Essay

Corruption has taken a deep root, which has swallowed up the life of our society. There is hardly any area of social, economic, political and religious activities which is free from any kind of corruption. Corruption has become so common that most people have started considering it as a part of their life.

Bribery and corruption have increased a lot after 1947. Growth of democracy and industry, system of licenses and permits for setting up enterprises, securing quota of raw materials, import and export and expansion of trade and commerce are responsible for the increase in corruption. Strict laws against corruption have proved effective in curbing this menace.

Corruption flourishes as long as there are people who are willing to directly or indirectly give bribe and accept it. Every one of us has a weakness for easy money. People are ready to fall to any extent to do anything or indulge in corruption to maintain their so called standard of living. People indulging in corruption maintain double standards. On the one hand they take bribe and on the other hand they urge people to be honest and pious. This kind of hypocrisy adds to the crime.

It is not difficult to trace the causes of corruption. Corruption usually flourishes at the top and then gradually spreads to the lower levels. Gone are the days when people who joined politics had the spirit of serving the nation. Those who suffered to free their country from foreigners knew only to make sacrifices. He never expected any compensation for his sacrifice. There was a time when only selfless people used to enter politics. However, unfortunately, today's politics has become a business like any other. Modern politicians are no longer inspired by lofty ideals. To win elections, they spend huge sums of money with the hope that after they are elected, they will recover more than what they had spent. When those in power indulge in immoral conduct, a common man also freely indulges.

Government after government has promised to eliminate corruption from our public life but this evil persists. Of course, there are honest officers but they are in minority. Let us as a nation think seriously about what will happen when our public life is full of corruption. Only a certain amount of introspection by those in power can start the process of reducing the evil of corruption in our country. If the general public is indifferent, then corruption will continue to grow like cancer in our society, destroying all the good. If corruption persists, our country will become a diseased country and remain a developing country.
