What is a passport? A passport is a document issued to travel from one country to another.  It is a 36- or 60-page booklet form issued by the Ministry of External Affairs.  In fact, a passport conveys the identity and nationality of a person.  The passport of the passport holder also contains his photo, date of birth, address and signature details.

How to apply for a passport

To apply for a passport, first go to the passport website www.passportindia.gov.in (Passport Services, Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India) and register and create your account.  After opening the account, verify your email ID and proceed to fill the application form.

  • Before filling the application form, make sure that all your details are correct.  All your details must match your documents.
  • After this, fill all the information sought in the application form.  There is also a choice of other names of the applicant in the application form for the passport.  It is better that you just fill in your original name.
  • After this, fill the Aadhaar Card, Voter ID, PAN ID and other details to authenticate your application form.
  • While filling the application form, you will see an option of non-ECR category.
  • Applicant is required to obtain SSC (Class X) or higher education certificate from a recognized university to be eligible for non-ECR category.
  • His birth certificate can serve as an ECR for people over 50 years of age.
  • See which category you fall in, then tick accordingly.
  • After this, the details of the family will have to be filled in which the name of the parent or guardian has to be filled.
  • In the next part, the current or permanent residential address has to be filled in so that the police verification can be done at your current address.  If your old address is asked, please mention it in the application form.
  • If you are a student and live in a hostel, you will need to provide a bonafide certificate for address confirmation when applying for a passport.  Apart from this, the home address can also be filled, but after verification of the form, it is necessary to provide the proof of the address of the bonafide and the guardian.
  • You must also provide the phone number of your parents and relatives as an emergency contact.

After this, the following options have to be filled to verify the details filled in the identity certificate and passport.

  1. Identity certificate (issued for refugees or people who do not have a permanent state, but live in India).
  2. Diplomatic passport or previous / current passport.
  3. First applied for passport but not issued.

Criminal records and other such issues are asked.  Those who do not have a criminal record cannot make any choice.  After this go to the online payment and submit the prescribed fees.

After filling the form, select your nearest PSC (Passport Seva Kendra) or PO (Passport Office) and select any date given for appointment to get it.

After filling the form, wait for the police verification of your current address of police verification. For verification, a police officer or a police constable can contact the current address given by the applicant.  He can interrogate your neighbor or two people you know.

Wait 15-30 days, you will get your passport.

How much is the passport fee

If you apply for a 36-page new or re-issued passport, you will have to pay an application fee of Rs 1500 and an additional fee of Rs 2000.  This passport is valid for 10 years.

If you apply for 60 pages or for a reissued passport, you will have to pay an application fee of Rs 2000 and an additional Rs 2000 as an immediate fee.  The validity of this passport is for 10 years.

If you are under 18 years of age and you apply for a 36-page new or re-issued passport, the application fee will be one thousand and the additional Tatkal fee will be Rs 2000.

If your 36-page passport is lost, damaged or stolen, an application fee of three thousand rupees and an additional immediate fee of two thousand rupees will have to be paid to recreate it.
