Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior is a 2020 Indian Hindi-language historical action film, written and directed by Om Raut and produced by Bhushan Kumar, Krishna Kumar and Ajay Devgn under T-Series Films and Ajay Devgan Eiffels.  

The film was dubbed into the Marathi language after popular demand.  Tracing the life of Maratha warrior Tanaji Malusare, it stars Ajay Devgn, Saif Ali Khan and Kajol in the lead roles.  

It also stars Sharad Kelkar and Luke Kenny in supporting roles.  Established in the 17th century, it revolves around Tanaji's attempts to reclaim Kandhana Fort as it passes on the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb, who transfers his control to his trusted Rajput protector Udaybhan Singh Rathore.

The film was launched on 20 July 2017, with Raut making his directorial debut in Bollywood.  Raut, who previously directed Lokmanya: Ek Yug Purush (2015), for which he was praised, the film was dubbed into the popular sought-after Marathi.  

Principal photography began on 25 September 2018, and was completed within May 2019.  Filming mostly took place at Film City in Mumbai, and some scenes were shot in Pune.  Cinematography and editing was handled by Keiko Nakahara and Dharmendra Sharma.  

The background score was composed by Sandeep Shirodkar;  The soundtrack album was composed by Ajay-Atul, Tip-Tradition and Mehul Vyas and was released under the T-series.

Tanhaji was released on 10 January 2020 in 3D and traditional formats in India.  The film received positive reviews praising the performance of Devgan and Khan, noted by cinematography and editing critics.  

The film grossed ₹ 367.65 crore (US $ 52 million) worldwide, thus becoming the highest-grossing Bollywood film of 2020.  The film was voted as the Best Foreign Film to be screened at the 78th Golden Globe Awards.

(Plot)

In 1647, Tanhoji's father, Kaloji Malusare, gave him sword-wielding training, later succumbed to Mughal plunder at Umrat.  17 years later in 1664, the now-adult Tanhaji, along with his younger brother Suryaji, commands the Maratha army of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj to attack an intruding Mughal cavalry.

In 1665, the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb sent Jai Singh to intimidate Shivaji Raje from the rapid imperial expansion into the Deccan, thus taking 23 forts under his control. 

Later, Mughal commander Bashak Khan orders a quick leave of the strategic fort Kondhana, leaving Shivaji Raje's mother, who insults Jijabai, to remain barefoot until the fort is captured.

Tanhaji is also told about the treaty.  Five years later, Shivaji Raje's detective informed him about the plan by Aurangzeb to hand over the Kondhana Fort to his Rajput general Udayabhan Rathod and use it as a base for the southern imperial expansion of Aurangzeb. 

Raje plans to re-appoint Kondhana, considering himself to lead the campaign as Tanhaji, though a competent general, cannot be employed due to the upcoming marriage of his son Reba.  Meanwhile, Tanhaji celebrates Holi with his family.  The Marathas begin their war preparations and Shivaji warns his generals to keep Tanaji knowing about the expedition. 

Tanaji arrives at Rajgarh to invite Shivaji to Reba's wedding.  Chandraji Pisal, a Maratha general who was attempting to sit on the throne of Shivaji Raje, revealed the secret plan on the recommendation of his nephew Chulya. Tanaji convinces Shivaji and Jijabai to allow him to lead the expedition and postpone Reba's marriage.

Elsewhere, Udayabhan reaches Burhanpur, while the Marathas discuss the possibilities of his route.  Tanhaji plans an attack, but the pistol sends Chullia to warn Udayabhan about this, his plan being to sabotage and kill Tanhaji's mission so that Shivaji Raje appoints him as the in-charge of the mission. 

Pisal intends to overthrow Shivaji Raje and join hands with Udayabhan.  Udaybhan is also bringing Kaila Kamala Devi N Marg, the sister of his Rajput general Jagat Singh.  Chullia informs Udaybhan about Tanhaji's plan of attack and he tricks Tanaji into attacking the disguised Maratha soldiers under Mughal attire. 

Elsewhere, Udayabhan reaches Kondhana and aims for a huge cannon at Rajgarh, threatening Shivaji's security.  Exiled, Tanhaji arrives at Kondhana alone to learn about a secret thief inside.  Udayabhan kills a guard for disobeying security protocols.  

Tanhaji recovers his dead remains and persuades the villagers to betray Udayabhan.  He is recommended to attend a Shivaratri program at Kondhana where he kills Chullia for treachery.  Tanhaji is imprisoned and tortured by Udayabhan.  Jagat Singh secretly leaves Tanaji, revealing Udaybhan's plan to marry his sister. 

Tanhaji promises to free him from the clutches of Udayabhan.  Tanhaji runs away from the thief-gateway and returns to Umrat.

Udayabhan hangs the guards responsible for Tanaji's escape and Jagat Singh agrees to marry his sister to Udayabhan on the eve of Ashtami, thus to mock the wedding preparations until her seclusion.  It convinces.  

Tanhaji now planned to attack Kondhana directly during the night of Ashtami on 4 February 1670.  He surrounds the fort with various entrances and attacks the Mughal army.  The illusion allows Jagat and Kamala Devi to escape.  

Udayabhan becomes alert and Tanaji dies in the ensuing battle, though he catches Kondhana before killing Udayabhan.  Shivaji's army conquers Kondhana but sheds tears on Tanaji's death.  

Later, he personally oversees Reba's wedding, while Aurangzeb's dream of winning southern India remains unfulfilled.
